Question Time...Homework?

Madison is going to be ten years old in a month and a half, and going into junior high in the fall (hate that my school district does that with them so young on the bus with 8th graders)...my question is even though I'm a teacher, what age should parents stop checking homework totally and completely?

By this I mean, right now we check all of her homework. If we find errors, we have her correct it. At what point do we just check to make sure it's done and hold her responsible for if it's right? Is there a cut off age? Clearly when the questions start getting harder on our memory banks would be an easy out! LOL I don't want her or Lincoln to reach high school and think like many of my students that homework doesn't matter because my parents don't check anyway. I don't think I'll ever stop checking, but how much to check, now that's the question. Thoughts on this...

I guess it would depend on how responsible she is. My nephew is 14 and has ADHD(bad) so my sister checks to see if he did his homework and then spot checks what she can. His problem is that he doesn't bring home most of his homework. I'm guessing you could start spot checking it next year.

Thanks Momma!! She's pretty good about doing her homework and just recently said in her exasperated 9 year old voice: "You don't have to check everything!!!"

LOL

Dont ever stop checking and if there is something that you dont know the both of you can figure it out and learn together, because its the little moments like that children remember and cherish. Dont feel embrassed for not knowing. There isnt one person in the world that knows everything. Lastly you can just have her older sister LoLo check it!! :)

Hi Phoebe! Lea and Leo do their HW in my presence so I always know that HW is getting done, but by 7th grade the HW got difficult enough that if I wasn't sure I could allow her to make mistakes and let the teacher deal with it because if I reteach something and it is not the same way the teacher taught it it could be confusing for her and me. LOL! I ask her what subjects she has and once she runs it down I ask if I can help her with anything. Usually she says no, but because she is so used to having me check things she usually will come and show me everything anyway. Leo is 10 so we still check eveything and will continue until 7th grade starts since that is the official end of Elementary school.
