Atlantic Antic Puts All Street Fairs On Notice!!

We had a fantastic time at the Atlantic Antic Street Fair today!! Now I remember why we used to go every year! Won't make the mistake of missing another one. There was so much food to eat, the choices were endless: steak or sausage & peppers, mini steak sliders (we had that), fried fish (we had that too!), roti, shish kebabs, sandwiches, roast corn (yep, we ate that too!), BBQ, sushi...believe me I could go on and on.

Then there were the endless booths of clothes, jewelry, knick knacks and what not. My only complaint: don't the vendors realize that people come to street fairs to buy things they can't normally get at a much discounted price??? Usually at a street fair I'm looking for 3 things: unique clothing items, jewelry, and bags, and this time was no different. Trust me I saw some things that literally had my haggling as if my life depended on it, and the vendors were not coming down from their starting points sometimes in the $100s. WTF! Sad to say that I did not get that super eclectic sliver purse with the silver strands all around, or the purple silk dress with the gold wiring neckline, or the jean skirt with the Kente' material on the bottom, or the bomb ass silver necklace with the exaggerated dangling pieces to accentuate any buxom neckline! Sigh! But I did walk away with 2 cowrie shell earrings (one for $5 and one for $7), a silk any way you wrap it skirt for $15, and a au naturale cowrie head band for $25 (my most expensive purchase but it was so different I had to get it to be my accent piece for my hair after I passed the transition phase). Oh, and Maddy got a cool teal scarf for $5.

I must say that there is something wonderful about being among like minded people. Specifically African American women of every shade and hue. I don't remember the last time I gave and received so many compliments at one time. I felt so beautiful every time a sister stopped me to admire me and Maddy's fabu Bantu Knots or express how much they loved my dark skin. There was a time in my life when it was nothing but harsh insults for my dark skin color, and today seemed to wash away any doubt in my mind that my black IS beautiful!! I was even nervous about the knots but every few feet someone stopped me to ask me how I did it, and how beautiful it was on the two of us! Maddy just beamed and her smile got bigger and bigger! What a proud mama I was!

All in all, it was a great time had by all, and here are some pics to prove it!
The endless sea of people...imagine maneuvering strollers through this!
Me and my sexy knots...feeling real and fabulous all over!

The sleeping kiddies...Linky and cousin Jaden
And my gorgeous mini-me!!

I read your article about little miss chocolate and was very touched. I know that with you and others at school she will be ok. Hope she gets the therapy she needs. Atlantic antic is one of the things i miss about Brooklyn, don't we know how to put on a party.Have the same problem with those expensive items. I lov to look at Afro-centric art, paintings, ceramics etc but unable to afford them. By the way you and Maddy look like sisters and the hairdo is fabulous.
